Balanced Instrument Cable
With regard to balanced versus unbalanced instrument cables the simplest way to explain it is.
Balanced instrument cable. A balanced electrical signal runs along three wires. 10 foot guitar bass instrument cable custom made by worlds best cables using mogami 2524 wire and neutrik np2rx b np2x b inch 6 35mm gold ts connectors 5 0 out of 5 stars 22 26 95 26. The case for unbalanced cables. A ground a positive leg and a negative leg.
Inside these cables there are two wires and a shield. Two signals wires plus a separate ground wire. Both legs carry the same signal but in opposite polarity to each other. Of course things are rarely so simple and straightforward in the audio world so a little more detail is in in order.
The structure of a balanced audio cable is similar to an unbalanced cable with one addition. Any noise picked up along the cable run will typically be common to both legs. Trs connections have three contact points conductors separated by two insulator rings. One wire connects to the tip the other to the ring and the shield to the sleeve.
A balanced audio cable has a ground wire but it also carries two copies of the same incoming audio signal sometimes referred to as a hot positive and cold negative signal. What s the difference between the hot and cold signal. Balanced quarter inch cables have a different tip. Two signal wires and a ground wire.
An example of a mono balanced signal would be a line input or output from a mixer or audio interface. Use balanced cables for balanced equipment and unbalanced cables for everything else. The signal wires pass an identical audio signal through each wire while the surrounding ground wire works the same as in unbalanced cables shielding the signal wires from external electronic interference. Trs cables can be used for mono balanced signals as well as stereo signals.
Two of those wires carry the signal while one carries the ground. As in the unbalanced cable the ground wire still surrounds the signal wires and is used as a shield against interference. Headphones receive stereo signals over trs cables. Balanced cables have three conductors and three wires.
A balanced cable by contrast has three conductors in the connector and three wires in the cable. Rather than the ts tip they have what is called a trs tip ring sleeve tip.
